licensing terms that will assist you in figuring out what type of license will be
needed for your project. At the bottom of the page you will see various licensing
forms. Please pick the one that suits your needs.
If you are interested in licensing a song that The P.F.F. Music Company Inc. controls
both the Synchronization and Master Rights please indicate the additional information
required on the form. You can open the document as a word file, fill it out , save it,
and email it to the email address listed at the bottom of the page.
LICENSING TERMS
Two types of copyrights exist, one for the use of a recording (Master Use License)
and another to be used for the composition. The Master Use License is obtained from
the owner of the master (usually the record company) and the license for the use of
the composition is obtained from the publisher of the composition. These licenses
are called
THE MECHANICAL LICENSE AND THE SYNCHRONIZATION LICENSE.
- Mechanical License -
This Mechanical License is used when an artist or a record company on behalf of its
Recording Artist wishes to record a song written by someone else (the cover song)
for including on the recording artist’s record for distribution and sale to the public.
This license is used generally anytime someone wants to use a song that is owned
by someone else on a recording.
- Synchronization License -
For Use Of Musical Composition In Motion Picture
This Synchronization License is used by a film producer to contract with a songwriter or
the songwriters publisher to use a song in a film, where the song is synchronized to the
action on the screen. The license is obtained from the songwriter or songwriter’s
publisher of the song and a master use license is obtained from the artist or
the artists record company for use of the recording of the song in the film.

-MASTER USE LICENSE-
A Master Use License is obtained from the artist or artist’s record company
for use of the recording of the song in the film, video, television program or
Advertisement.

- SYNCHRONIZATION TELEVISION LICENSE REQUEST -
This Synchronization License is used by a Television producer to contract with a
Songwriter or songwriter’s publisher to use a song in a television program, or a
television advertisement where the song is synchronized to the action on the
screen. This license is obtained thru the songwriter or the songwriter’s publisher
for use of the song and a master use license is obtained from the artist or the artist’s
record company for use of the recording of the song in the television program or
advertisement.

- SYNCHRONIZATION VIDEO LICENSE REQUEST -
This Synchronization License is used by a video producer to contract with a songwriter
or the songwriter’s publisher to use a song in a video or music video whereby the song is
synchronized to the action on the screen. This license is obtained from the songwriter or
songwriter’s publisher for use of the song and a master use license is obtained from the
artist or artist’s record company for use of the recording of the song in the video.
- Performance License -
ASCAP
For the performance of a song via radio, TV, movies, general
broadcasting and internet performance. Performance licenses are obtained by the
venue or station where the performance takes place or originates from. These licenses
are obtained through ASCAP. There are organizations worldwide that cover different
territories for both performance and mechanical.
